The walls are DOWN at Big Thunder Mountain, and Disney just dropped a NEW story detail. After more than a year behind construction walls…the “wildest ride in the wilderness” is finally stepping back into the spotlight.
And Disney didn’t just remove the walls — they added something fans didn’t expect: new story-driven lore straight from the ride’s mysterious past.
In a major visual milestone, the construction walls surrounding Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad have officially come down ahead of its highly anticipated reopening.
The walls were removed on May 1, signaling that the attraction’s lengthy refurbishment is nearly complete and guests are just days away from riding again.
This marks the final step after a closure that lasted over a year, with the ride set to reopen on May 3, 2026.
Disney Adds NEW Storytelling with Barnabas T. Bullion
Alongside the reopening, Disney shared a brand-new in-universe letter from Barnabas T. Bullion, the fictional president of the Big Thunder Mining Company.
The message, written as if addressed to workers returning to the mine, celebrates the reopening and calls employees back to duty after upgrades to the railway. It leans heavily into the attraction’s backstory, referencing strengthened infrastructure, upgraded locomotives, and the return of mining activity in the mountain.
The tone also playfully dismisses the “rumors and superstition” surrounding the mountain — a nod to the haunted and mysterious lore longtime fans know well.
This wasn’t just a cosmetic refresh; the updates are substantial. During the extended closure, Disney replaced the ride’s track, introduced new trains, restored previously non-functioning effects, and updated both the opening scene and the finale.
On top of that, safety upgrades were completed, and the attraction will now feature a lower height requirement, making it accessible to more guests.
The addition of Barnabas T. Bullion’s letter is part of a broader effort to deepen the ride’s narrative.
New story elements (including connections to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.) are being incorporated into the queue and overall experience, expanding the mythology of Big Thunder Mountain beyond what guests have seen before.
This aligns with Disney’s recent push to make classic attractions feel more connected, immersive, and story-driven.
With the walls down and the reopening just days away, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is officially entering its final phase before welcoming guests back.
