Disney just dropped a new teaser that hints at some seriously immersive updates to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and let’s just say, things might get a little more intense when this iconic coaster reopens.

We’re talking new scenes, major upgrades…and yes, apparently thousands of bats!

After being closed since early 2025 for a massive refurbishment, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is officially set to reopen on May 3, 2026, and it’s bringing a whole lot of new magic with it!

This isn’t just a routine maintenance project either. Disney has essentially rebuilt major parts of the attraction, including replacing the entire track, introducing new ride vehicles, and updating key effects throughout the experience.

So…What’s This About 2,000 Bats? 👀

According to recent teases tied to the refurbishment, one of the standout additions involves a new scene element featuring a swarm of bats — reportedly numbering in the thousands.

And honestly? That fits perfectly with the ride’s existing lore — where mysterious forces and strange happenings have always been part of the mountain’s legend.

A Whole New Look Inside the Mountain

One of the biggest confirmed upgrades is the addition of the Rainbow Caverns scene, which is getting a major visual overhaul.

Guests will travel through glowing underground caves filled with phosphorescent pools and shimmering rock formations, creating a much more vibrant and atmospheric moment in the ride.

Disney

It’s a pretty big shift from the previous version, and it’s designed to feel both more immersive and more visually striking while still staying true to the original story.

It’s Not Just About Looks

The changes go far beyond visual updates. Disney has also focused heavily on ride performance and comfort, with a completely new track system and updated trains designed to deliver a smoother experience.

They’ve even lowered the height requirement from 40 inches to 38 inches, making the attraction accessible to more families. So while the ride may feel wilder than ever, it’s also being reimagined to be more inclusive and enjoyable for a wider range of guests.

Why This Feels Like More Than a Refurbishment

Between the new scenes, upgraded effects, and teasers like the bat-filled caverns, this project is starting to look less like a simple refurbishment and more like a full-scale enhancement.

Disney

It’s not about replacing fan favorites…it’s about making them feel new again!

If Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is on your must-do list (and let’s be real — it probably is), this reopening is shaping up to be a can’t-miss moment!

We’re getting closer to reopening day, and Disney is clearly just starting to reveal what’s been happening behind those construction walls. Make sure to check back soon for more updates, previews, and everything you need to know before this “wildest ride in the wilderness” makes its big return!
