This Pixar story didn’t just disappear…it’s sparking a LOT of debate!

Pixar is no stranger to emotional storytelling, but this time, it’s what didn’t make it to the screen that’s getting attention.
A recently revealed canceled project is now making waves across the entertainment world, and the reason behind it? Let’s just say…it’s raising some serious questions.
According to recent reports, Pixar scrapped a feature film titled Be Fri after several years in development, and the reasoning is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about parts of the story.

The film, whose title is short for “best friend,” centered on two teenage girls navigating a fractured friendship before being pulled into a cosmic, anime-inspired adventure. The story blended coming-of-age themes with a larger, universe-spanning mission — very much in line with Pixar’s signature emotional storytelling style.
But despite reportedly strong internal feedback and multiple revisions, the project was ultimately canceled in late 2023 after about three years of work.
So…what happened?

According to insiders cited in reports, concerns from leadership played a major role — specifically around the film’s perceived audience appeal. One source claimed the movie was viewed as having too much of a “girl power” focus, with executives reportedly questioning whether it would resonate with younger male viewers.
That decision has since sparked backlash and wider conversations about the types of stories major studios choose to tell, and which ones they don’t.
It also comes at an interesting time for Pixar. The studio is currently balancing original storytelling with major franchise entries, including upcoming releases like Toy Story 5, while trying to maintain its reputation for emotionally driven, broadly appealing films.

And while Be Fri may never see the light of day, its story (and the reasons behind its cancellation) are clearly striking a chord with fans and industry watchers alike.
