Disney+ is officially bringing back Animorphs—and this time, it has one of Hollywood’s most powerful storytellers behind it.

A new live-action Animorphs series is currently in development for Disney+, with Ryan Coogler attached as an executive producer through his Proximity Media banner. The project marks a major revival of the beloved 1990s sci-fi book series—and could introduce the franchise to an entirely new generation.
Originally created by K. A. Applegate and Michael Grant, Animorphs followed a group of teenagers who gain the ability to morph into animals as they fight back against a secret alien invasion happening right under humanity’s nose.
While the premise may sound like classic YA sci-fi, the series has long stood out for its darker themes—tackling war, trauma, identity, and moral ambiguity in ways that pushed beyond typical children’s storytelling.

And that’s exactly what makes this reboot so interesting.
According to early details, the Disney+ adaptation will follow a similar core setup, focusing on a group of teens navigating everyday life while uncovering a hidden extraterrestrial threat.
However, the big question is how closely it will stick to the source material—and how far Disney+ is willing to go in embracing the story’s darker tone.

The original Animorphs books, which ran for over 50 installments between 1996 and 2001, built a massive fanbase and developed a reputation for being far more emotionally complex than expected.
That legacy presents both an opportunity and a challenge.
On one hand, the involvement of Coogler—best known for projects like Black Panther and his recent award-winning work—signals that Disney is taking the adaptation seriously and may be aiming for a more elevated, character-driven approach.
On the other hand, adapting such a mature story within the Disney+ ecosystem could require balancing darker themes with broader audience appeal.
There are already signs that fans are paying close attention.

Early reactions have included both excitement and cautious skepticism, particularly around whether the series will fully incorporate key elements from the books—like the Yeerks, a parasitic alien species central to the original storyline, and the full scope of the morphing abilities.
Even the original creators have reportedly expressed some concerns about how the adaptation will come together, though they remain hopeful given the team involved. Still, the potential here is massive.
With nostalgic IP continuing to dominate streaming platforms, Animorphs could follow in the footsteps of other successful reboots that tap into both longtime fans and new audiences. Its mix of sci-fi action, teen drama, and deeper thematic storytelling makes it uniquely positioned to stand out in Disney+’s growing lineup of original series.
And if done right, it may finally give Animorphs the large-scale adaptation fans have been waiting for. For now, the series remains in early development, with no official release date announced—but one thing is clear: this is a reboot worth watching closely.
