News broke this week about a lawsuit involving Erik von Detten, an actor many Disney fans know from Brink!, The Princess Diaries, and as the voice of Sid in Toy Story.

It’s a serious story, so here are the facts as they’ve been reported, and it’s important to say upfront that these are allegations and none of them have been proven in court.
The lawsuit was filed on May 11, 2026, in Los Angeles County Superior Court by Sheila Greenberg, 85, and her husband Norman, 97, an elderly California couple. The defendants are von Detten and Rosland Capital, a precious metals company the complaint says he worked for. The couple is bringing five claims: financial elder abuse, fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, constructive fraud, and conversion.
Here is what the complaint alleges. The Greenbergs contacted Rosland in 2020 after seeing a TV ad for precious metals investing. They say they told von Detten they had about $2 million in retirement savings and little knowledge of gold investing, and that he presented himself as knowledgeable. They allege they then made several purchases of Lady Liberty gold coins, totaling about $2.1 million, with the coins stored in a warehouse instead of delivered to them. They further allege the coins carried large premiums and were worth considerably less than they paid. They say they learned this in 2025.
The couple is seeking at least $900,000 in compensatory damages, along with punitive damages, and they’ve asked for a jury trial.
A few other details help with the context. Rosland Capital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 2, 2026, and a case conference is scheduled for November 9, 2026. No response from von Detten has been reported.
This isn’t a fun topic, and I don’t want to treat it like gossip. Von Detten is someone a lot of us grew up watching, and longtime fans may feel a little caught off guard. At this point, all we have are a plaintiff’s allegations in a lawsuit that is just getting started, and everyone is entitled to respond to them in court. What I’d take from it is a gentler reminder, which is that if you have older family members, it’s worth checking in on big financial decisions and talking through any investment pitch with someone you trust. We’ll watch for updates as the case moves forward.
We’ll keep sharing news from across the Disney world, from the parks to the people behind the screen. Keep checking back with us here at Theme Park Scope, and as always, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
