Of all the ways I expected Disney to promote its newest hotel, “paint an optical illusion lazy river onto a Manhattan sidewalk” was not on my list…

…and yet here we are, and I am a little obsessed with the audacity of it.
On October 2, Disney brought a one-day-only 3D street mural to Flatiron Plaza in New York City, giving passersby a taste of Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge months before the resort even opens. The installation sat at the corner of 23rd Street and 5th Avenue, right in the shadow of the actual Flatiron Building, running from 10 AM to 5 PM before presumably disappearing back into the concrete like the world’s most elaborate chalk-art fever dream.

The mural itself was created by street artist Tracy Lee Stum, and if that name doesn’t mean anything to you yet, here’s why it should: she holds an actual 2006 Guinness World Record for the largest chalk painting ever created by an individual. So when Disney wanted someone to turn a section of plaza concrete into a convincing illusion of a winding river, they did not mess around with who they hired. The finished piece stretched down the plaza like a literal ribbon of blue water, complete with painted rock formations lining the banks and a waterfall rendered at the far end, with a turf lounge area and an A-frame Lakeshore Lodge sign set up right alongside it. Guests who showed up got to physically step into the scene for photos, and based on the images floating around, people absolutely took Disney up on that offer, including some guests posing with actual Lakeshore Lodge-branded inflatable pool rings scattered across the painted water.
The whole thing is built around Daydream River, described as the resort’s “blissful lazy river,” and seeing a calm, nature-inspired water feature rendered in chalk between New York skyscrapers is a genuinely funny contrast, in the best way. Lakeshore Lodge’s entire design identity is built around celebrating nature through the eyes of Disney’s own artists and storytellers, so plopping a slice of that concept down in the middle of Manhattan for exactly one day feels like a pretty clever bit of guerrilla marketing rather than just another press release with concept art attached.

If you’ve been following our coverage of this resort already, you know we’ve been tracking its reveals piece by piece, including the grand lobby’s glowing fiberoptic river and the new Branch & Brush lounge we covered recently. This NYC mural adds one more confirmed detail worth filing away: Disney has now specified the resort’s thematic inspirations as Bambi, Pocahontas, Brother Bear, Encanto, and Fantasia, which is a genuinely wide spread of Disney Animation eras all feeding into one resort’s design language. It also helps confirm the resort’s final room count, landing at 967 rooms, making this a genuinely sizable addition to Walt Disney World’s lineup once it opens.

Here’s the part that actually matters if any of this has you considering booking a stay: reservations for Lakeshore Lodge open to all guests on October 8, just six days after this NYC activation. Given how much buzz Disney’s generated with this steady drip of reveals, culminating in a literal cross-country marketing stunt, I would not expect prime dates to sit wide open for long once that window hits.
If you missed the mural in person, don’t worry too much, since this was always billed as a single-day pop-up rather than a lasting installation. But it’s a genuinely fun data point in the broader Lakeshore Lodge rollout, and a reminder that Disney’s clearly treating this resort’s launch as a full marketing campaign rather than just another hotel opening quietly on the calendar.
Lakeshore Lodge opens July 1, 2027, on the former site of River Country near Fort Wilderness. We’ll keep tracking every reveal between now and then, so check back with Theme Park Scope before reservations open on October 8.
