If you’ve walked through the Walt Disney Studios Lot at Hollywood Studios sometime this summer and stumbled into an actual warrior-training session with Mulan or watched Goofy run an impromptu game with a group of kids, you already know why this update matters.

On May 26, 2026, the reimagined Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard opened with free-roaming characters as one of its very first standout features. No formal meet-and-greet line, just characters wandering the courtyard, playing games, and interacting with guests spontaneously.
As the courtyard’s popularity became obvious, the question started circulating: what happens to these characters once The Magic of Disney Animation opens and its structured “Off the Page” meet-and-greets move things indoors? Earlier though in February, Disney confirmed the six character meet-and-greet setups guests will find inside Off the Page.
Back in July of this year, Disney set September 14 as the official opening date for The Magic of Disney Animation which we’ve all be eagerly anticipating.
And now this week with the opening just days away, Disney has confirmed the courtyard itself will keep its own, separate roaming character presence going even after the September 14 opening, and it won’t just be a repeat of the characters moving indoors!
The characters roaming the courtyard going forward will be different from the six characters getting dedicated meet-and-greet spaces inside Off the Page. Disney hasn’t confirmed exactly who’s taking over outside yet, but there’s also word that characters may show up roaming inside The Magic of Disney Animation itself, beyond just the structured meet-and-greets…meaning even the indoor experience might carry a little bit of that same spontaneous energy!
This answers a real concern longtime followers of this project have had since spring: whether Disney would let the courtyard’s free-play magic quietly fade out once there was a “real” attraction to point guests toward instead. That’s exactly the kind of thing that’s happened before at other Disney locations, so getting an explicit confirmation that it’s not happening here is worth taking seriously.
Hollywood Studios currently leads all four Walt Disney World parks in total character count, and roaming, unscripted character interactions like this have quietly become one of the more beloved additions to hit Walt Disney World in the last couple of years — building on the success of Cool KIDS’ Summer events, which have brought similar dance parties, surprise character appearances, and hands-on activities to all four parks over the past two summers. Keeping the courtyard’s free-roaming characters going, rather than retiring them the moment a more “official” attraction opens nearby, is a good sign that Disney’s actually listening to what’s resonating with guests instead of just moving on to the next big thing.
