One of Magic Kingdom’s biggest expansion projects just entered a critical new phase.

Piston Peak construction

Construction crews working on the future Piston Peak National Park area at Magic Kingdom have reached a significant milestone, with underground pipe installation now underway at the massive project site. The work marks one of the first major infrastructure steps needed before vertical construction can begin in earnest.

Piston Peak National Park is the upcoming Cars-inspired expansion that will replace portions of Frontierland as part of Disney’s ongoing transformation of Magic Kingdom. The new area is expected to draw inspiration from the Rocky Mountain-themed national park seen in Pixar’s Planes: Fire & Rescue while incorporating characters and elements from the Cars franchise.

According to recent construction updates, crews have begun installing underground utility pipes throughout the site. While guests won’t see flashy ride structures or themed buildings just yet, this type of infrastructure work is a crucial part of any major theme park expansion. Water, drainage, electrical, and utility systems all need to be established before foundations and attractions can move forward.

Land moving

The project site has already undergone extensive clearing and demolition work over the past several months as Disney prepares the area for the future land. The start of underground utility installation suggests construction is steadily progressing beyond the initial site-preparation phase.

Piston Peak will eventually feature new attractions, themed environments, and experiences inspired by the world of Pixar’s Cars. The expansion is part of Disney’s larger investment in Magic Kingdom, which also includes the upcoming Villains-themed land planned for beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

While Disney has not yet announced an official opening date for Piston Peak National Park, construction activity continues to ramp up behind the scenes, giving guests a glimpse at the future of Frontierland.
