One of the most noticeable construction projects at Magic Kingdom is finally starting to disappear.

After months of repainting, cranes, drained waterways, and overnight work, Cinderella Castle is looking more like its classic self once again. The latest milestone in the project has now been completed, with water returning to the castle moat as Disney wraps up its extensive 2026 repainting effort.
For guests visiting Magic Kingdom, it’s one of the clearest signs yet that the transformation is nearly finished. The most significant update this week is the return of water to the moat surrounding Cinderella Castle.
For months, the moat remained drained as crews worked on the castle repainting project and refreshed areas around the iconic structure. Now, guests can once again see reflections of Cinderella Castle shimmering across the water, restoring one of Magic Kingdom’s most recognizable views.

The refilling of the moat marks one of the final visible steps in the project and dramatically improves the overall appearance of the hub area surrounding the castle.
The Repainting Project Began Earlier This Year
Disney officially began the Cinderella Castle repainting project in January 2026.
The work started with draining the moat before crews moved in to begin repainting the castle and surrounding structures. Throughout the project, Disney worked to minimize guest impact by lowering equipment out of view during operating hours whenever possible. Entertainment offerings such as “Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire” and “Happily Ever After” continued throughout the work with only minor operational adjustments.
A Return to a More Classic Color Palette
The 2026 project restored Cinderella Castle to a color scheme more closely aligned with its traditional appearance.
The refreshed palette features shades of gray, cream, blue, and gold, replacing the rose-pink look introduced in 2020. Disney previously explained that the updated colors were inspired by the castle’s classic appearance and designed to enhance its architectural details while maintaining the iconic look guests remember.

Over the course of the project, guests watched as crews systematically repainted the castle’s towers, walls, spires, and surrounding forecourt turrets. The final sections of pink paint disappeared earlier this spring, signaling the end of the castle’s six-year rose-pink era.
Progress Accelerated Throughout the Spring
Throughout March and April, Disney made rapid progress on the project.
Work expanded from the main castle structure to the surrounding forecourt turrets, while crews also completed the repainting of the blue spires and roof sections. High-reach lifts remained visible during portions of the project as painters worked on upper sections of the castle.

By April, many construction elements had already begun disappearing. Cranes were removed from the area, leading many fans to believe the project was entering its final stages. Additional work later shifted to the rocks and infrastructure surrounding the moat before water could return.
One of Magic Kingdom’s Most Iconic Views Returns
The return of water is particularly significant because the moat is a major part of Cinderella Castle’s visual appeal.
For generations of Walt Disney World guests, the reflection of Cinderella Castle in the surrounding water has been one of the most photographed views in Magic Kingdom. With the moat now refilled and the refreshed paint scheme largely complete, that iconic sightline has returned.

Guests entering Magic Kingdom can once again enjoy unobstructed views of the castle framed by water, landscaping, and the restored color palette.
Is the Project Finished?
While the moat has been refilled and the vast majority of repainting work appears complete, minor finishing touches may still be taking place.
Recent reports have indicated that the project was in its final phase, and Disney previously described the repainting effort as “almost complete.” With water now back in the moat, only small remaining tasks are likely visible to guests.
The refilled moat is the strongest indication yet that Disney’s 2026 Cinderella Castle repainting project is effectively complete.

After months of work, Cinderella Castle is once again looking picture-perfect. For guests visiting Walt Disney World this summer, it may be the perfect time to stop for that classic castle photo.
