One of Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s most beloved residents just celebrated a milestone birthday, and the party was almost as big as she is!

This week, one fan-favorite elephant was the center of attention as Disney’s animal care teams put together a special celebration complete with enrichment activities, treats, decorations, and even a few surprises. One of the largest residents at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is officially 16 years old.
Luna the elephant recently celebrated her Sweet 16 at Walt Disney World, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom marked the occasion with a special birthday celebration filled with themed decorations, enrichment activities, toys, and plenty of treats. Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Vice President, Dr. Mark Penning, shared photos and videos from the festivities on social media, giving Disney fans a closer look at Luna’s special day.
In his post, Dr. Mark wished Luna a happy birthday and highlighted the work of Disney’s Animal Nutrition and Animal Care teams, who created a variety of enrichment experiences designed specifically for her Sweet 16 celebration.
The birthday setup featured a handmade “Luna’s Sweet 16” sign surrounded by colorful enrichment items, gift boxes, toys, and treats placed throughout her habitat. The display created a festive atmosphere while also encouraging Luna to explore and interact with the enrichment elements prepared by her care team.
One of the most unique decorations included a cardboard car display, leading some fans online to joke that Luna had even received her very own car for her Sweet 16 birthday.
Photos from the celebration showed Luna investigating the decorations while enjoying hay, treats, and enrichment activities throughout her habitat. Video shared by Disney also captured Luna exploring her birthday surprises and quickly making use of some of the cardboard decorations that were part of the celebration.
Highlighting Disney’s Animal Care Programs
While the celebration was certainly adorable, it also offered guests a glimpse into the extensive enrichment programs used by Disney’s Animal Care and Animal Nutrition teams.
