This massive box office hit is coming to digital WAY sooner than expected.

That was fast…like really fast.
In a surprise move, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially set to arrive on digital platforms on May 5, landing just about one month after its theatrical debut. That’s a much shorter window than we typically see for a major blockbuster, especially one performing this well.

The film takes Mario far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into a cosmic adventure, where he explores galaxies and outer space worlds filled with new challenges and enemies.
This time around, Mario and his allies (including Luigi and Princess Peach) are pulled into a larger intergalactic story, teaming up with new characters like Rosalina as they face off against Bowser Jr. in a high-stakes mission that expands the Mario universe in a big way.

Despite heading to digital quickly, the movie has already proven to be a major hit in theaters.
It opened as the biggest film debut of 2026, pulling in around $190 million domestically and dominating the box office right out of the gate.
Since then, it hasn’t slowed down much. The film has already crossed over $800 million globally, making it one of the highest-grossing movies of the year and one of the most successful animated releases so far.

It also became the first film of 2026 to pass $300 million domestically, and at one point even climbed to the top spot as the highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide.
Even with that level of success, the decision to move to digital this quickly shows how much release strategies are evolving.
Instead of waiting the traditional multi-month window, studios are now fast-tracking major titles to at-home viewing while they’re still fresh in audiences’ minds. In this case, it means fans who missed the theatrical run (or just want to rewatch) won’t have to wait long at all.
Mark your calendar for May 5, because one of the biggest movies of the year is heading home sooner than anyone expected.
