A major court ruling just hit Disney, and it comes with a $50 million price tag.

The Walt Disney Company

A judge has officially ordered Disney to pay $50 million as part of a class action settlement, marking one of the more significant legal developments involving the company in recent months.

According to reports, the ruling requires The Walt Disney Company to move forward with a $50 million settlement in a class action lawsuit.

While details of the case itself are more complex, the lawsuit centers around claims brought by a group of plaintiffs alleging wrongdoing that ultimately led to this court-approved agreement.

Class action settlements like this typically resolve disputes without Disney admitting wrongdoing, while still compensating affected parties.

In this case, the $50 million payout will be distributed among eligible members of the class, though exact amounts per individual can vary depending on the terms of the settlement. This settlement is with YouTube TV and DirecTV subscribers that Disney previously agreed to pay. In 2023, the original lawsuit was filed that claimed Disney inflated streaming costs by requiring that streaming platforms include ESPN.

ESPN

The settlement classes included in the lawsuit extend to customers who purchased a YouTube TV or DirecTV streaming live pay TV subscription from April 1, 2019, through the preliminary approval. Additionally, the agreement also requires Disney to consider subscription package proposals that include fewer Disney networks, including ESPN.

The settlement was signed by Judge Edward J. Davila on March 31, 2026, and a fairness hearing is set for January 14, 2027. This hearing will determine whether the proposed settlement benefits class members.

This development comes at a time when Disney is already navigating leadership changes, major investments in theme parks, and evolving strategies across its entertainment divisions.
