The next chapter of Disney’s most ambitious (and controversial) project is officially underway—and it’s not what guests expected.

Disney

What was once one of the most immersive experiences ever created by Disney is now entering a completely different phase of its life. And if you’ve been wondering what’s really happening behind those closed doors near Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we’re finally getting a clearer picture.

The former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is now moving into a new phase of its transformation into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering—marking a major shift from guest experience to behind-the-scenes operations.

Originally opened in March 2022, the Galactic Starcruiser was designed as a first-of-its-kind immersive hotel experience, where guests lived out a two-night Star Wars story aboard the Halcyon. But despite its innovation, the experience closed in September 2023 after just 18 months.

By early 2025, Disney confirmed the building would not reopen to guests—instead, it would be repurposed as a workspace for Imagineers, the team responsible for designing Disney parks, attractions, and experiences.

So What’s Happening Now?

Recent updates indicate the project has entered a more active construction phase, with permits and on-site activity pointing to a deeper interior overhaul.

Construction filings tied to the project (often labeled under internal project names) suggest large-scale “general construction” work, not just minor updates.

What’s interesting is that the new permit lists Balfour Beatty Construction as the contractor, with a scope of “general construction.” This name might sound familiar due to the fact that Balfour Beatty was also named in the first NoC filed for this project in August 2025.

Additionally, visible activity like construction equipment, dumpsters, and site modifications signals that Disney is actively reworking the building’s interior to support its new purpose.

In other words, this isn’t a light refresh. It’s a full transformation.

From Luxury Starcruiser to Creative Hub

While it may feel like a dramatic pivot, the change actually solves a unique challenge.

The Galactic Starcruiser building was highly specialized, with windowless rooms, no outdoor amenities, and a layout designed entirely for storytelling—not traditional hotel use.

That made it difficult to convert into a standard resort or guest-facing experience. Turning it into office space, however? That’s a different story.

The facility is now expected to serve as a central hub for Imagineering teams, potentially supporting major upcoming Disney World projects—everything from new lands to large-scale expansions currently in development.

What This Means for Disney World

For fans hoping the Starcruiser might return in some new form, this update is pretty definitive—the experience, as we knew it, is not coming back.

But at the same time, this shift could play a key role in shaping the future of Disney Parks.

The same building that once hosted one of Disney’s boldest experiments may now help create the next generation of attractions, lands, and experiences across Walt Disney World.

It’s not quite the ending many fans expected, but it might be the beginning of something just as impactful, just happening behind the scenes.
