This is where the transformation stops feeling like a concept and starts feeling real.

If you’ve been following the massive expansion happening at Magic Kingdom, the latest aerial photos just gave us one of the clearest looks yet at what’s coming next. And while it might not look like much at first glance—dirt, walls, and construction patterns—this is actually the moment where the future of Frontierland starts taking shape in a very tangible way. Let’s break down what we’re seeing and why this update matters more than you might think.

The future of Frontierland is officially under construction—and now, we’re starting to see how it all comes together.

New aerial photos reveal continued progress on Disney’s upcoming Cars-themed expansion, also known as Piston Peak National Park. And while this project has been in motion for a while, this latest update gives us one of the clearest indicators yet of how the land will physically take shape inside the park.

Right now, much of the focus is on a key feature: a retaining wall and waterway system that will define the edge of the new land. According to the aerial views, Disney has been actively shaping a stream that will run along the southern perimeter of the expansion, near areas like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the Frontierland boardwalk.

This isn’t just random groundwork—it’s foundational storytelling.

Disney has previously described this area as featuring both “roaring rivers” and more peaceful waterways, designed to blend the rugged wilderness of a national park with the charm of Frontierland. And now, we’re seeing the infrastructure that will actually bring that vision to life.

What’s especially interesting here is where the work is happening.

Construction is currently concentrated near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is temporarily closed for refurbishment—likely giving Disney a strategic window to complete some of the more disruptive work in that area first. From there, the project will move into its next phase: reshaping the land with massive amounts of fill dirt before vertical construction begins.

In other words, this is still the early days, but important ones.

Because once that groundwork is finished, we’ll start to see the real magic happen: ride foundations, structures, and eventually the immersive theming that transforms this space into something recognizable.

And if you zoom out a bit, this update represents something even bigger.

This entire project is part of one of the largest expansions in Magic Kingdom history, replacing the former Rivers of America area with a fully immersive Cars-inspired wilderness. Instead of just adding a ride or two, Disney is reimagining an entire section of the park—and updates like this are the first real proof that it’s happening.

So while it may just look like a construction site today, this is the groundwork for something that’s going to completely redefine Frontierland in the years ahead.
