If you’ve got a Disney World vacation booked at Disney’s Contemporary Resort soon…you’re going to want to know about this.

Disney has officially announced the next major phase of the ongoing refurbishment project at one of Walt Disney World’s most iconic hotels, and the updates could impact views, walking paths, pools, and overall guest experiences for quite a while.
Construction has expanded to the exterior of the famous Contemporary Resort Main Tower as Disney continues a lengthy multi-year refurbishment project scheduled through late 2027.
Exterior maintenance work on the Main Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort officially began on March 23, 2026.

Disney says refurbishment work will continue in phases across several areas of the resort, including the Main Tower, Bay Lake Tower, the atrium areas, exterior elevator landings, and resort pathways and bridges.
Guests staying at the resort may see or hear construction during daytime hours, and Disney has warned that some views around the property could be impacted while work is underway.

Considering how iconic the Contemporary’s A-frame tower is, this is probably going to be one of the most noticeable Disney resort refurbishments happening over the next couple of years.
The Skyway Bridge Will Temporarily Close
One of the biggest temporary impacts announced so far involves the Skyway Bridge connecting Bay Lake Tower and the Contemporary Main Tower.
Disney confirmed the bridge closed from Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM beginning March 30 through May 1, 2026. The bridge reopened nightly after 5PM and remained available on weekends.
Disney noted that guests may need to use alternate walking routes during the daytime closures.
Additional refurbishment projects are also happening simultaneously at Bay Lake Tower. According to Disney’s updated refurbishment notice, the Bay Cove Pool, Cove Bar, water play area, and the whirlpool spa all temporarily closed for maintenance through early May 2026.
The Main Pool at Disney’s Contemporary Resort remained open during construction.

Disney also announced exterior elevator landing repairs at Bay Lake Tower beginning in late March and continuing through late May 2026.
What makes this project especially significant is the timeline. Disney says the broader Contemporary Resort refurbishment originally began in September 2024 and is now expected to continue through late 2027.
Recent photos already show scaffolding and construction walls being installed along sections of the resort exterior, with some guest rooms temporarily removed from service while crews work on balconies and exterior paneling.
So far, Disney has not announced any major thematic redesigns tied to the refurbishment project, meaning much of the current work appears focused primarily on exterior maintenance and infrastructure updates rather than large-scale resort reimagining.

Originally opening alongside Walt Disney World on October 1st, 1971, Disney’s Contemporary Resort remains one of the most recognizable hotels in all of Disney Parks thanks to its legendary A-frame design and monorail running directly through the center of the building.
The resort continues to be one of the most popular deluxe hotels at Walt Disney World thanks to walking access to Magic Kingdom, monorail transportation, Chef Mickey’s, California Grill, Bay Lake Tower Disney Vacation Club villas, and classic Disney history and architecture.
While construction projects are never ideal during a Disney vacation, long-term refurbishment work like this helps preserve one of the most historic resorts on Disney property for years to come.
