Disneyland files demolition permits for Monsters, Inc. attraction.

A major Disneyland expansion is moving one step closer to reality, and a beloved Pixar attraction may be on its way out!

New filings from Disney have sparked fresh buzz across the Disney Parks community after confidential demolition permits were submitted for multiple locations in Disney California Adventure. While nothing is being torn down just yet, the paperwork signals that major changes are officially progressing behind the scenes for the Hollywood Land area.

According to reporting from multiple outlets, Disneyland has filed nine confidential demolition permits with the City of Anaheim tied to Hollywood Land at Disney California Adventure — most notably including the show building for Monsters, Inc., Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!

The permits also extend to nearby structures such as the Hollywood Lounge area, suggesting a broader rework of the surrounding land — not just a single attraction removal.

While the filings do not include an official demolition start date, they are widely understood to be early groundwork for a large-scale expansion project in the area.

Current reporting points to a major Avatar-themed land planned for Disney California Adventure, inspired by Avatar: The Way of Water and future installments in the franchise.

Even with the permit activity, the Monsters, Inc. attraction is not expected to close immediately. Instead, reports indicate it could remain open until around 2027, giving guests more time to experience the ride before construction fully takes over the footprint.

If these permits are any indication, Disney is transitioning Hollywood Land into its next major storytelling phase — moving away from long-standing Pixar-era offerings and toward large-scale immersive lands built around newer franchises.

For fans, it’s a bittersweet moment: progress toward a massive new expansion, but also the slow goodbye to a quirky, fan-favorite dark ride that has anchored DCA for nearly two decades.

While Disney has not confirmed demolition timelines publicly, permit activity like this is often one of the clearest early signals that big changes are approaching. Expect more updates as planning continues, and as Disney inches closer to officially reshaping one of Disney California Adventure’s most recognizable corners.
