Another major milestone has been reached for Monstropolis.

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a new round of permits for the upcoming Monsters, Inc.-themed land at Hollywood Studios, signaling that the project is moving into its next phase. Here’s what we know.

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed multiple new permits for set installation throughout the upcoming Monstropolis land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

According to the filings, a total of four permits were submitted, all listing contractor Icarus Exhibits Inc. and describing the scope of work as “install set elements.”

The permits cover several key locations within the former Muppets Courtyard area, including:

  • The former MuppetVision 3D theater
  • The former PizzeRizzo restaurant
  • The former Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano
  • The site of the demolished Stage 1 Company Store

Most of these structures are being repurposed rather than demolished, with interior work now beginning as Disney transitions from exterior construction into detailed theming.

The Stage 1 Company Store, however, has already been removed to make way for a new open walkway and plaza space, which will help connect guests to the upcoming attractions within the land.

Monstropolis—an upcoming land inspired by Pixar’s Monsters, Inc.—is currently under construction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and is set to replace the former Grand Avenue area.

The land is expected to feature multiple experiences, including a suspended “door vault” roller coaster, which will be the first of its kind at a Disney theme park.

The filing of set installation permits is a notable milestone in any Disney project. This phase typically indicates that interior environments and show elements are beginning to take shape, moving the project closer to completion.

While Disney has not announced an official opening date for Monstropolis, continued permit activity and visible construction progress suggest the project is steadily advancing.

For now, these latest filings offer one of the clearest signs yet that the transformation of this area is moving into its next stage—bringing Monstropolis one step closer to becoming a reality.
